Prison Dogs
What are Prison Dogs?
Allies for Greyhounds gets most of their greyhounds directly from the racetrack or they are hauled from Florida using haulers. These Prison Greyhounds come from the racetrack but are taken to prison where they are trained in basic obedience and socialized by inmates. The greyhounds spend all their time with their handlers. They are never left alone. Some greyhounds walk up to 14 miles per week! They are proficient in the commands, sit, down, stay, come, and heel. They go up and down stairs and are ready for their forever homes right when they come from the prison. They are also up-to-date on their vaccinations, have their teeth cleaned and have a clean bill of health. They have their Canine Good Citizen certification as well. Over 2,000 hours of training goes into each Prison Greyhound. They come with a journal of their time in prison as well as any other accessories they acquire while in prison (blanket, toys, toothbrush etc). The inmates really grow attached to these dogs so they always appreciate letters once the greyhound finds it’s forever family! More information on The Greyhound Inmate Experience can be found here.
What Prison Dogs do you have available?

How do I adopt one of these Prison greyhounds?
The application process is no different than adopting a greyhound that didn’t go through the Prison program with the exception of the adoption fee. Allies for Greyhounds has increased the adoption fee for these Prison Greyhounds because of all the training they have received in the program.
First we have you go to our website and fill out an online application. When we receive your application a local volunteer will contact you and set up a “Home-Visit” so that we can sit down face to face and get to know each other and answer any questions you may have. The home-visit is probably the most important part of the adoption process. Once an applicant is approved for adoption, we will help you pick out a dog that is suitable for you and your family. We don’t “force” a dog on you but we help you pick a dog that is going to fit your needs. The adoption fee of $600.00 covers: Spay/Neuter, Teeth Cleaning, Shots Updated, three month supply of Heartworm Preventative, Martingale Style Collar (specially designed for greyhounds), Leash, their Prison training journal and accessories, and of course a greyhound. Along with this, you will also have access to a large greyhound community where greyhound owners pride themselves on their knowledge and love of this wonderful breed!
