This loving boy is a little shy but a lot sweet. He didn’t race before retiring but is still ready for his forever home where he will be cherished like the duke that he is!
Duke is a handsome little parti-boy (white and brindle ticked coat) with a lot of love to share. He is initially a little velcro with people and will follow them around until he feels more confident in a new place. He has been eager to explore his foster home, but has yet to venture downstairs into the basement. He is curious and inquisitive about new things.
Duke loves attention and treats. He occasionally enjoys playing with toys, but he is sometimes surprised when they make noise. He is not as toy obsessed as some other greyhounds. He is an active boy and has plenty of energy. He would do well with activities to engage him mentally and physically throughout the day (training games, puzzles, short walks/sniffaris, nose-work). He is a relatively quick learner, but has a short attention span.
During walks, Duke is a little wary of traffic, so he would prefer to take walks where there aren’t too many quick moving vehicles. He enjoys being outside and playing in the fenced yard at his foster home. He has responded well to initial attempts at basic grooming like tooth brushing and nail filing. He is making good progress with crate training, although he does not like being left alone for too long. At night, he does well with the crate positioned beside his foster mom’s bed. He is learning simple commands like “in” to enter his crate, “quiet”, and “find a bed”. He responds well to gentle correction and praise.
Duke is cat safe. He greets the geriatric cat in his foster home with sniffs and licks, but will chase anything that moves quickly, so a younger cat will likely need to reinforce its boundaries with a swat or two. He loves stealing the cat’s bowl and dish mat…he thinks he’s being sneaky about it, but he always gets caught. He gets along well with the other greyhounds in his foster home, and enjoys greeting the neighbor’s dog at the fence. He has a great little roo, and loves to sing with his foster dog siblings. Duke would likely enjoy being in a home with other dogs to keep him company, but he could do well as an only dog if his people aren’t out of the house for long periods of time. He just wants to be one of the gang – whether that is dogs, people, or both!
If you’re looking for a sweet little pup with plenty of personality, Duke may be the one for you!
